About Thaumcraft
Thaumcraft defined the research-based magic mod. You scan the world to learn aspects, combine them through research, and unlock infusion, golems and dangerous eldritch content.
It remains popular in 1.7.10 and 1.12.2 modpacks. Because it targets old versions, it needs Java 8 and an older Forge.

Requirements and dependencies
- Minecraft 1.7.10 (Thaumcraft 4) or 1.12.2 (Thaumcraft 6) with Forge.
- Java 8, which those Minecraft versions use.
- Baubles for the same Minecraft version.

How to install Thaumcraft
Install on Forge
- Install Forge for the Minecraft version you want (1.7.10 – 1.12.2 supported). See how to install mod loaders.
- Download the Thaumcraft file for your exact Minecraft version and Forge from an official source.
- Download the required dependencies listed above for the same version: Baubles.
- Put the
.jarfiles in themodsfolder of your game directory or instance. - Launch the Forge profile. Check the Mods menu to confirm Thaumcraft loaded.
Common problems and fixes
The game crashes on a modern Java version.
Old Forge versions only run on Java 8. Set your launcher profile to a Java 8 runtime.

Will Thaumcraft be updated to newer versions?
There has been no release after the 1.12.2 beta. For modern magic packs, look at mods such as Botania or Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks.
Is Thaumcraft 6 finished?
Thaumcraft 6 for 1.12.2 was released as a beta. It is playable and used in many packs, but some planned content never arrived.
