About Applied Energistics 2

Applied Energistics 2 replaces chests with a digital storage network. Items are stored as data on storage cells inside drives, and every terminal on the network can see and pull from the whole inventory.

The real depth is autocrafting: with patterns, crafting CPUs and pattern providers, the network builds complex items on request, calling other machines for each step.

Configuration

Client options live in the config folder. World and server options control things like channel behaviour and spatial storage. Change server options only on the server, then restart it.

Compatibility

Minecraft versions with at least one release on Modrinth, synced 2026-11-07. Always download the file that names your exact version and loader.

Install on NeoForge

  4. Put the .jar files in the mods folder of your game directory or instance.

Common problems and fixes

Devices on the network show they have no channel.

Normal cables carry 8 channels and dense cables carry 32. Split large builds into subnetworks or route dense cable to busy areas.

Crash on launch mentioning a missing library.

Install every required dependency shown for your loader in the compatibility table, then launch again.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn channels off?

AE2's configuration includes a channel mode option. Check your version's config file or the official guide for the values it accepts; on a server only the owner can change it.

How does autocrafting work?

You encode recipes into patterns, place them in a pattern provider next to machines or a molecular assembler, and add crafting CPUs. Requests then run automatically.

Does AE2 work with other tech mods?

Yes. Import and export buses and pattern providers interact with most mods' inventories.
